Charlie had been allowed to drink a little beer mixed with lemonade, and while heâd been happy to join in the conversation at first, after an hour or so, heâd wandered off to play on his games console in Judeâs little office. Jude and Harriet were taking it in turns to check on Artie now. Sometime around eleven, a tinny little voice came from the baby monitor.
âMummy!â
Harriet pushed herself from the sofa. âI wonât be a minute. Heâs doing this all the time at the moment â night terrors or something they call it.â
At this Jude looked alarmed. âHow long has this been going on? It didnât happen last time he stayed with me.â
Harriet shrugged. âAbout a week, maybe. He just wakes up all stressed. Apparently itâs a toddler thing â nothing to get antsy about. Mum says I used to do it too.â
She left the room, Jude watching her go with a look of concern.
âYou heard her,â Damon said mildly. âHeâll be alright in a minute.â
Jude turned to him and now his look of concern had turned to one of irritation. Lizzie knew what he was thinking without having to ask. Damon had no children, hardly took any interest in Artie as far as Lizzie could tell, and wasnât far short of a man-child himself. It was alright for him to offer glib reassurances because â though she could be wrong â Lizzie would bet heâd never had a single responsibility in his life.
âIâll turn the music off for a while, shall I?â Lizzie offered. âJust until Artie settles off againâ¦â
Jude threw her a grateful look. She went to the iPod dock and pressed pause on the playlist. As she took her seat again, Harriet shouted for Jude.
âCan you come in for a minute?â
Jude got up and went out, leaving Lizzie and Damon alone. Here were two people now thrown together who had nothing more in common than the fact that their partners had once been partners, and if any situation promised an awkward silence, this was it. Lizzie glanced at him and offered a tight smile.
âSoâ¦â she began in a bid to fill the gap. âYou never did say what you do for a living.â
âIâm in a band.â
âReally?â Lizzie asked. Considering what sheâd heard that evening, she vowed never to get conned into going to see them. âWhat are you called?â
âWe havenât settled on a name yet.â
âOh. Where do you play?â
âHavenât actually played a gig yet.â
Lizzie frowned. âSo youâre not making money from it? You have another job?â
âNot exactly⦠Iâm helping out on my dadâs farm until we get going. Weâre trying to build up a YouTube audience first, then weâll get on the circuit.â
âWill you try for a record deal?â
Damonâs lip curled. âGive all our earnings to a faceless corporation? No chance! You donât need a record deal these days; you can do it all yourselves and keep all the money.â
âOhâ¦â Lizzie said, folding her hands over one another in her lap. âWell, thatâs good.â
They fell to silence again.
